the Art of Art Nouveau

Alphonse Mucha

Alphonse Mucha is widely regarded as one of the defining figures of Art Nouveau. His work shaped the visual language of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and continues to influence art, design, and illustration today. Characterized by elegant female figures, flowing lines, organic ornamentation, and a refined sense of harmony, Mucha’s imagery balances decorative beauty with strong composition and symbolism.

The Mucha Workshop by Vincent
In 2026, I will be giving a series of workshops at Drents Museum De Buitenplaats in Eelde, inspired by the work and visual principles of Alphonse Mucha. These workshops are not about copying Mucha’s images, but about understanding his way of thinking: his use of line, rhythm, framing, color, and the relationship between figure and ornament.

Participants will explore how Mucha constructed his compositions, how he stylized the human figure, and how decorative elements can support, rather than overwhelm, the subject. We will look closely at posture, gesture, hair, floral motifs, and background structures, and translate these elements into contemporary sketches, studies, and finished works.

“The purpose of my work was never to destroy but always to create, to construct bridges, because we must live in the hope that humankind will draw together and that the better we understand each other the easier this will become.”

The workshops are suitable for both experienced artists and motivated beginners who are interested in drawing, painting, illustration, or design. Through observation, guided exercises, and hands-on practice, participants will develop a deeper understanding of Art Nouveau and discover how Mucha’s visual language can still resonate within a modern artistic practice.
These sessions offer not only technical insight, but also a moment of slowing down, of reconnecting with craftsmanship, attention, and the poetic potential of line and form that lies at the heart of Mucha’s work.
