The title work depicts a quiet swimming pool interrupted by the shadow of a fighter jet. Leisure and threat occupy the same frame. This tension runs throughout the series, which explores the ways people attempt to gain control over their surroundings by creating rules, reducing risks, drawing boundaries and designing systems intended to provide certainty.
But how safe are we really? And when does our need for control become a limitation in itself?
Measuring just 10 × 10 centimetres, the works invite the viewer to come closer. Humour and absurdity provide an accessible point of entry without resolving the questions beneath the surface.
Ultimately, Schijnveilig is not so much about danger itself as it is about our human need to convince ourselves that everything is under control.
