The first work in the series makes this question both visible and tangible. Its physical form is a damaged picture frame that will continue to deteriorate over time. A continuously rising price is projected within the frame and, as time passes, beyond its edges. The work becomes more expensive every second, without any intervention in the object itself.
Alongside this first work, I am developing a series of related concepts that examine the different mechanisms through which value is assigned.
Price is no longer something added to an artwork after it has been made. It becomes one of the materials of the artwork itself. This Work Gets Expensive does not attempt to determine what art should cost. Instead, it reveals how strange our need is to capture value in a number.
